Leon Bosch es un gran virtuoso del contrabajo. Es el solista de contrabajos del famoso grupo ingles «The Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields» donde dirigió el también famoso Sir Neville Mariner durante muchos años.

Se ve que a Leon le ha picado la mosca de Cervera, es decir que Leon está tan entusiasmado (y yo también) de su descubrimiento del gran contrabajista y compositor catalán Josep Cervera i Bret y todo a que ver con el, que ha decidido gravar un CD enteramente de las piezas de dicho músico. Una gran noticia para la música Catalana y para los contrabajistas en general.

Gracias al haber tenido el privilegio de poder hacer bastante investigación sobre la vida del Sr. Cervera i Bret por la generosa colaboración de la familia Cervera. Tendré también el privilegio de escribir las notas musicológicas del antedicho CD del Sr. Bosch.¡Encantado estoy!

Leon is a great virtuoso of the Doublebass. He’s the bass soloist of the English chamber group called The academy of Saint Martin in the Fields which had been conducted by the great  Sir Neville Mariner during many years.

Leon it seems, has been bitten by the Cervera bug. that’s to say that he’s so ethusiastic about (and so am I) his discovery of the great late Catalan doublebassist and composer  Josep Cervera i Bret and everything todo with him that he’s decided to record a CD entirely dedicated to the works of the aforementioned musician. This is great news for Catalan music and for doublebassists in general.

Thanks to having had the priviledge of profoundly investigating the life of  Mr. Cervera i Bret and because of the generous family collaboration from the Cervera family, I’ll also have the priviledge of writing the sleeve notes to Mr. Bosch’s upcoming CD. I’m thrilled!

Where are your assets?

Do work and get paid once. Build an asset and get paid for as long as it lasts.

A retailer or a restaurant owner might work 18 hours a day–but the landlord makes just as much money from that effort, often more. The cheeseburger gets paid for once, but the rent bill comes every month.

Real estate is an obvious and simple form of asset. In 1928, my great grandfather traded his real estate assets for the sure thing of the stock market. The biggest difference between the rental houses he owned and the worthless stocks he bought was that the houses paid rent every month, while the stocks offered merely the promise of a later payoff.

Some of the assets you can build, not just buy:

Your brand. A brand isn’t a logo. It’s a promise and an expectation. When you overdeliver, you earn trust, trust that can bring you repeat business, access to new opportunities and the privilege of being able to count on your customers coming back. (Yes, it does hurt to ask).

Permission. The privilege of delivering anticipated, personal and relevant messages to the people who want to get them. People who would miss you if you were gone.

Expertise. You might lose your job, but they can’t take away what you’ve learned. If all you’ve just done is what you’ve done before, you might get paid, but you didn’t earn an asset.

In just three words, then, there’s the huge chasm between the trusted, experienced freelancer, the one you’re happy to hear from when she has a new idea, and the newbie or the short-term maximizer. Those guys have to start from scratch, each and every time.

Think about the individual, the entrepreneur or the small organization that has built up trust with a given market, that has permission to talk to that market and that has the expertise to execute on what it promises… Once you have those three, you call the shots. If, on the other hand, you’re merely a hard-working employee, doing what you’re told, you’re never going to get what your effort ought to produce.

Other assets companies can build include processes or machinery and a loyal and talented workforce. Individuals, though, can pay attention to, protect and amplify the first three as they do their work. They don’t take care of themselves, because there’s always pressure to trade them in for short-term rewards.

One of the biggest shifts the connection economy has brought is that assets are no longer reserved for companies and organizations. Now that everyone has the ability to own a slice of the attention paid to media, now that everyone can build and nurture a network, assets are no longer off limits to people who work for a living.

Your choice: intentionally build and nurture your assets, or ignore them in the pursuit of the next thing…

Un concierto de Jazz dentro de la programación del Festival de Jazz de Figueres

Àlex Carbonell y yo nos encanta el jazz. El es un reconocido virtuoso de este genero de música de su instrumento, el piano. Yo en cambio disfruto mucho tocando con gente que saben más que yo porque así aprendo un montón y me lo paso muy bien en el proceso.

Àlex y yo tuvimos una oportunidad de tocar en una taberna local de Figueres donde la respuesta a nuestra actuación fue bastante acogedora. Esperemos que hayan muchas más y que la colaboración no se pare aquí.

Àlex Carbonell and I love jazz. He’s a recognised virtuoso on the piano in this genre of music. I, on the other hand have lots of fun playing with people who are better than myself beceuse I learn so much and i also have a great time during the process.

Àlex and I had the oportunity to play at a local Pub in Figueres where the response to our concert was quite gratifying. Let’s hope that our collaboration doesn’t stop here.

Personalizar el instrumento: Una escultura para un mango de viola

¿Porque no pedir algo personalizado cuando se le pide un instrumento al lutier? Personalmente, pienso que hoy por hoy los instrumentos y las técnicas utilizadas para hacerlos son mejores que antaño. ¿Porque no arriesgarse y pedir algo más al creador? El lutier de hoy ha llegado a ser un copista. Pero no nos olvidemos que copiar, no es crear.  Hagan se un favor y uno  a vuestro lutier y pidan algo diferente. Seguro que se lo agradecerá.

Why not ask for something personalized from your luthier? Personally I feel that todays standards of making are higher than what they were years ago. So why not take a small risk and ask for something more from the artist-maker. The luthiers of today have mostly become copyists. Let’s not however forget that copying is not creating. So do yourself and your luthier a favour and ask for something different. I’m sure he’ll be happy you asked.

Mardi Graves 2013

El festival Mardi Graves dirigido por Jean Ané es uno de los festivales para contrabajistas mas interesantes de atender.

Este año el tema era sobre Giovanni Bottesini el gran contrabajista que vivio en el 1800’s. Conocido como el «Paganini del contrabajo», Bottesini dejo un legado muy fuerte y que perdura hoy en día con sus composiciones y metodología.

En esta edición del festival que tuvo lugar entre Montpellier y Perpignan, Jean invito a dos virtuosos para dar classes a los alumnos inscritos en el curso y varios concierto en conservatorios escogidos que albergaban el festival. Los dos contrabajistas fueron

 Jaques Cazauran y Alberto Bocini, que aprovechando el tema Bottesiniano del festival dieron conciertos ejemplares de las obras de este compositor y de otros compositores más contemporaneos.

Carles Cervera, Albert Cervera, y Yo tuvimos el privilegio de poder ser entrevistados por Pere Andreu Jariod sobre Josep Cervera i Bret, El gran contrabajista i compositor Catalán que vivió a principios de siglo en Peralada y Rosas desde 1883 hasta 1969. Pronto, el contrabajista inglés Leon Bosch sacará un CD integramente de obras de Josep Cervera para ser presentado en la convención de la Sociedad internacional de Contrabajistas en Nueva York en junio de 2013

La pregunta en este post, que me han hecho muchas veces, la respondo con una serie de imágenes que, como es sabido, valen más que mil palabras. Eso sí, el trabajo de encerdar un arco es un trabajo minucioso y tiene que ser preciso para que el músico pueda conseguir hacer música al máximo de sus posibilidades sin que la cosa se tuerza (salten los crines, se rompa la vara o que los crines no agarren la cuerda). El lutier/arquetero tiene una importante responsabilidad cuando encerda un arco porque es cómplice de la buena o mala música que suenará.
